Ouroboros Sun and Moon

For this week, under the challenge of creating an art asset within 6 days, I wanted to finally experiment with animation.

The theme this week is "paradox" meaning anything that contradicts or conflicts with it's own existence. Of course this could be taken out of context and can be based on games or other concepts involving even just the word paradox, but I have a paradox that I am completely obsessed with. I have always loved the concept of Ouroboros or Jörmungandr, world snake, etc. But I recently came across this concept posted on google:

I loved this image so much that I decided to make my animation based off of it.

First I modeled a snake to use, and shaded him very simply. I than took his model and stripped him to literal bones by cutting out shapes and then duplicating spine bones. Finally I colored this bone version, and named them accordingly: Sun and Moon. I made a basic geometric background that looks vaguely like space, and then prepared a camera directly above both of the snakes.

Using Bezier curves that I had shaped into a path for the snakes, I tracked their animations down this path, and swapped to a version that could loop seamlessly, keyframing them perfectly. This was my first time working with keyframes or animation at all, so it was a great learning experience.

I finally created a black hole to finish the animation up, and then exported the entire thing as a video. Using a video editing software, I then added free sounds and some music to my animation and speed build respectively.

This is my final video and render:

This was a very experimental process and I learned a lot from it. I hope you enjoyed as well!
